We apply professional topside paint to all surfaces above the waterline of your yacht. Long-lasting, high-gloss results guaranteed with Awlgrip, Alexseal and Jotun brands.

In this article we explain what yacht topside painting is, the types of marine paint, the surface preparation process and professional application techniques used by expert yacht painters.

1. Introduction: Why Is Yacht Painting So Important?

A yacht's exterior finish reflects the owner's standards and directly affects the vessel's market value. Topside paint is the protective and aesthetic coating applied to all surfaces above the waterline. Applied by a professional yacht painter, a quality topside paint protects against UV radiation, salt water corrosion, moisture damage and physical impact for years.

2. Types of Yacht Paint

TypeFeatureLifespan

1K PolyurethaneSingle component; moisture cured; easier application2–4 yrs
AlkydTraditional; budget-friendly, easy to apply1–2 yrs

3. Surface Preparation

Professional yacht painters agree: 80% of paint success depends on surface preparation. No matter how premium the paint, poor surface prep leads to peeling and blistering within months.

  • Remove salt, grease, silicone residues with pressure wash and solvent
  • Sand with 80–120 grit for coarse, 180–220 for fine keying
  • Measure existing DFT and check for osmosis
  • Apply compatible epoxy primer and allow full cure

4. Application Process

Ideal conditions: 15–28°C temperature and below 65% relative humidity. Apply 2–3 coats of topcoat by airless spray or HVLP, measuring DFT after each coat. Target total DFT: 80–120 μm.
