Superyacht Fairing

In superyacht fairing we achieve perfect hull fairness with laser measurement, specialist fairing compound systems and multi-stage sanding. ICOMIA standards.

In this article we explain superyacht fairing: what it is, how it's planned, which compound systems are used and how perfect hull fairness is achieved.

1. What Is Fairing?

Fairing is the process of bringing the boat hull to a hydrodynamically perfect shape by eliminating surface indentations, ridges, waves and curvature errors using specialist filling compounds. At the superyacht level, fairing is performed before painting and is often the most labour-intensive part of the entire project. Correct fairing directly improves visual perfection, hydrodynamic efficiency and therefore fuel economy.

2. Process

Laser scan (3D mapping of hull deviations) → coarse fill (epoxy filler for deep areas) → 80-grit sand → fine fill (lightweight fairing compound) → guide coat application → fine sand (120–220) until guide coat zero → HB primer → final sand (220–320) before topcoat.

3. Conclusion

Superyacht fairing is the most technically demanding and labour-intensive stage of high-end yacht painting. DR.YACHT achieves superyacht-class fairness with laser-assisted fairing and multi-stage guide coat systems.
