Final Coat (Topcoating)

Using 2K polyurethane systems for your topcoat application, we achieve a glossy, durable and long-lasting finish. Delivery with DFT measurements and warranty.

In this article we explain topcoating as the final stage of yacht painting — system types, gloss values and professional application techniques.

1. What Is Topcoating?

Topcoat is the outermost layer of the paint system, responsible for both the visual appearance and the final protective barrier. It locks the underlying primer system against UV, abrasion and chemical exposure. The entire final appearance of your yacht is determined by topcoat quality.

Gloss 90+

48 hrs

Minimum cure time after final coat before handling

2. Topcoat Systems

2K Polyurethane is the gold standard — hardener-cured, 5–7 year lifespan, gloss 80–95. 1K Polyurethane moisture-cures easily, 2–4 years. Epoxy topcoat offers superior chemical resistance but lower UV resistance; usually finished with a UV-protective layer.

3. Application Process

Proper sequence: surface inspection → degreasing → epoxy primer → sealer/tie-coat → topcoat 1st coat → inter-coat sand (320–400 grit) → 2nd and 3rd coats → final polish → gloss measurement. Temperature: 15–28°C. Humidity: below 65%. Pot life must be respected (typically 4–8 hours for 2K systems).

4. Professional Tips

Always measure gloss with a gloss meter after application. Target: 85–92 GU for 2K systems. This report serves as both a quality certificate and warranty document. Thinning ratio is critical — typically 10–15% reducer for spray application.

5. Conclusion

Topcoating is the most visible and lasting investment in your yacht's appearance. DR.YACHT delivers all projects with DFT documentation, gloss reports and manufacturer warranty.
