Scraping & Old Paint Removal

We completely remove old, peeling or deteriorated paint layers by mechanical, chemical or thermal methods, preparing a clean surface for the new paint system.

In this article we explain why paint removal is necessary, which methods are used and how to select the right technique for different hull materials.

1. Why Remove Old Paint?

Every paint system has a finite lifespan. When paint blisters, peels or DFT has accumulated too high, removal before the new system is required. Excessive paint build-up reduces new paint adhesion, adds weight and hides underlying problems.

2. Methods

Mechanical scraping/grinding: all hull types, slow, low cost. Chemical stripper: GRP/wood, medium speed. Grit blasting: steel/aluminium, very fast, achieves ISO Sa 2.5–3. Soda blasting: GRP/wood, no hull damage, eco-friendly.

3. Conclusion

Scraping and old paint removal is the most fundamental step for successful new paint system application. DR.YACHT selects the most appropriate removal method for the hull type and prepares a clean, standardised starting surface.
