Metal & Rust Removal
In this article we explain rust and corrosion removal methods on boat metal surfaces, protective coatings and how to ensure long-term protection.
1. Why Does Corrosion Accelerate at Sea?
Salt water creates a powerful electrolyte environment that accelerates galvanic corrosion and electrochemical wear on metals. Contact between different metals (e.g. steel and aluminium) creates a galvanic cell and the weaker metal corrodes rapidly. Oxygen, moisture and salt together cause very rapid rust formation on steel surfaces.

2. Methods & Protection
Mechanical: disc grinding, wire brush, grit/soda blasting. Chemical: phosphoric acid rust converter (converts rust to magnetite), oxalic acid (for SS/aluminium), naval jelly. Protective coating: wash/etch primer → zinc-rich primer → epoxy primer. Galvanic prevention: sacrificial anodes (zinc, aluminium or magnesium).
3. Conclusion
Metal and rust removal directly affects the structural safety of the vessel and leads to increasingly difficult repairs if not addressed. DR.YACHT protects your vessel's metal surfaces long-term with comprehensive rust removal, primer and anode systems.
