Hull Sanding

1. Why Is Hull Sanding Necessary?

Hull sanding is the mechanical keying process applied to the surface before any paint, primer or coating application. Paint cannot adhere to a smooth surface — sanding creates the micro-texture for mechanical bonding. Without it or done incorrectly, even the best paint begins to peel quickly.

2. Grit Sequence

40–60 (stripping) → 80–120 (standard surface prep for primer/AF) → 180–220 (fine prep before topcoat) → 320–400 (between topcoat layers) → 600–2000 (wet sanding before polish).
