Epoxy Primer Application

Correct primer selection, DFT measurement and layer compatibility in epoxy primer application — the foundation of every professional paint system.

In this article we explain what epoxy primer is, why it is essential in marine applications, types, application techniques and its role in the full paint system.

1. What Is Epoxy Primer?

Epoxy primer is the critical connecting layer in the paint system, positioned between the hull and the topcoat/antifouling. Its roles: (1) Maximum adhesion to the hull, (2) Blocking water and moisture penetration, (3) Preventing corrosion and osmosis, (4) Providing a homogeneous base for upper layers. Without primer, even excellent topcoat adhesion fails quickly.

2. Types and Application

2K Epoxy Primer (hardener-cured; all marine projects), Epoxy Barrier Coat (osmosis protection), Wash/Etch Primer (metal surfaces), High-Build Primer (surface filler). Apply after 80–120 sanding and solvent degreasing. Mix base + hardener (pot life 4–8 hrs). Apply 1–2 coats by roller or spray; DFT after each coat; cure 24–48 hours before topcoat.

3. Conclusion

Epoxy primer application is the guarantee of the entire paint system's longevity. DR.YACHT applies brand-compatible, DFT-measured epoxy primer systems on every project.
