Antifouling Coating Systems

We protect your vessel's underwater surfaces from biological fouling with professional antifouling coating systems. Expert system selection advice and DFT-guaranteed application.

In this article we cover antifouling coating systems, selecting the right product for different hull types, system comparisons and professional application techniques.

1. What Is an Antifouling Coating System?

An antifouling coating system is a multi-layer paint system protecting all underwater surfaces (hull bottom, rudder, propeller surroundings, trim tabs) from marine organism attachment. While "antifouling paint" refers only to the final coat, an "antifouling coating system" encompasses everything from surface preparation through primer, tie-coat and antifouling layers.

2. System Layers

A complete antifouling system consists of: surface preparation → epoxy barrier coat (osmosis protection) → tie-coat (compatibility layer) → antifouling 1st coat → antifouling 2nd coat → optional 3rd coat for tropical/heavy use zones.

⚠ Galvanic Corrosion Warning

Copper-based antifouling paints must NOT be used on aluminium hulls. The copper-aluminium galvanic couple causes severe metal damage. Always use "aluminium-safe" antifouling systems on aluminium hulls.

3. Conclusion

The antifouling coating system, when correctly selected and professionally applied, optimises your vessel's underwater performance, reduces fuel costs and extends hull life. DR.YACHT determines the right system for your vessel and applies it to ICOMIA standards with DFT documentation.
