Pre-Paint Surface Analysis
The most critical yet most often skipped step in yacht painting is surface analysis. Projects started without proper analysis result in blistering, peeling, color mismatch, and premature wear.
Analysis Steps
1. Moisture Measurement
Using a pinless moisture meter, readings are taken from various points on the hull. Values above 15% indicate osmosis risk. 20%+ indicates active osmosis.
2. Paint Thickness
Digital DFT gauge measures existing layer thickness. GRP boats should have 300-600 microns total. Above 800 microns requires stripping.
3. Adhesion Testing
Cross-cut or pull-off test checks existing paint adhesion. Weak adhesion areas must be stripped and reapplied.
4. Osmosis Detection
Acetic acid smell test and visual inspection in underwater areas. If osmosis is found, full gelcoat stripping, drying, and epoxy barrier treatment is planned.
