Gelcoat Repair
In this article we explain what gelcoat is, which damage types require repair, how colour matching works and the professional gelcoat repair procedure.
1. What Is Gelcoat?
Gelcoat is the outermost layer of a fibreglass boat hull — a pigmented polyester or vinyl ester resin layer that provides both colour and surface protection. Typically 0.4–0.6 mm thick, it can be damaged by impacts, UV fading, water absorption and thermal stress.

2. Repair Process
Colour matching (spectrophotometer measurement) → surface preparation (V/U groove, solvent degrease) → colour-matched gelcoat application (slightly raised) → curing → sanding (400→2000 grit) → compound polish for mirror finish.
3. Conclusion
Gelcoat repair delivers high-quality results with correct colour matching and polishing. DR.YACHT uses spectrophotometer-assisted colour matching and machine polishing to make gelcoat damage invisible.
